WHY ARE THEY COMMMING IN SIDEWAYS?

What leads to the problems of wisdom teeth

Why is this happening?

wisdom teeth impacted

Whether you believe in God or Evolution, we must acknowledge that our ancestors had the same exact diet for about 200,000 years. That being tough roots, vegetables, meats etc. Then about 10,000 years ago we switched to an agricultural society. In which we suddenly shifted our diets significantly from a tough raw diet, to a soft cooked diet. Though this was great for food production, the quality and type of food changed significantly.

Anthropologists have suggested that because of this changeover of our diet, our jaw musculature no longer is forced to work as hard during our early development (childhood), leading to an underdeveloped jaw structure. This can in one way explain why there is a discrepancy between the size of our jaws, and the size of our teeth.  Also why there is such a significant portion of our population with crooked teeth.

Have you ever seen a horse with crooked teeth? They eat the same as they have for hundreds of thousands of years. Similarly, if you look at the jaw structure of indiginous people (amazon,Saharan Africa, Australia etc. ) which still maintain the same diet as our ancestors, you see that none of them need braces…Why?

My contention as a Periodontal Surgeon who loves to know the WHY, is that this is the exact reason for our epidemic of crooked teeth, and wisdom teeth coming out in all kinds of weird directions.  We have shifted what our bodies were created/evolved for.

Genetic Variability

Another possibility is with different genetics mixing with each other. If a person who is genetically large, has a child with someone who is genetically much smaller, there are now competing genetics. Similar to when a blonde has a child with a brunette, the child will only express one of those traits.

It is possible to gain the small jaw structure from one parent, while large teeth from the other. There are many different factors that go into what makes teeth become crowded or impacted. Though we can not change the world and science, at VDC Periodontics, we will do our best to help bring you back to a state of health.

Dr.Akmal’s philosophy

Traditionally, wisdom tooth removal has been a fairly aggressive surgery requiring patient’s to be put under. However, with the advent of new tools, and technologies, it is now possible to remove wisdom teeth, without having to expose the patient’s to the risks of  “Going Under”.

Dr. Akmal uses a series of surgical cuts and maneuvers, to section off small pieces of the tooth, and gently removes them with as little trauma as possible. By doing a non-invasive technique he is able to remove wisdom teeth without sedation!!! Additionally he may employ growth factors and grafting during the surgery to allow for faster healing after the surgery.
