Why sinus modification may be needed
The Sinuses
The Sinuses are hollow areas in your maxillary jaw bone just behind your “cheekbones”. These are used in filtration of airborne pathogens when you breathe in and out.
When are sinuses an issue for Dental Implant placement?
If you are having implants placed to replace teeth in the posterior maxillary arch (Upper premolars and molars), the location of the sinus may be a factor. Patients with enlarged sinuses may have a limited amount of space for implant placement.
As such, the Sinus area may need to be augmented to increase bone available to place an implant.
What’s a Sinus Lift?
The inside of the sinus has a paper-thin membrane, similar to an onion peel. Dr. Akmal makes a small opening into the sinus, and lifts this membrane up very carefully. Bone graft material is then introduced into space to increase the amount of bone available. An implant may be placed simultaneously, or Dr.Akmal may opt to wait a few months for the bone to solidify prior to implant placement.
