Dr. Akmal grew up in North Dakota, and then attended George Washington University, where he got his Bachelor's in Psychology. It is because of this background in understanding the complexities of patient anxieties, fears, and backgrounds that Dr. Akmal can help bring "Dental-Phobes" back into the clinic to receive the care they need.
After graduating, he was accepted to the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (The first dental school in the world!!!) at the University of Maryland. He was taught by some of the top clinicians in dentistry, and as the new dental school was built in 2006, he had the opportunity to utilize the latest technologies in dentistry.
Dr.Akmal then furthered his training by doing a 1-year residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh to learn to treat patients with more complex dental issues. This is where he found his true calling in Periodontics. Dr. Akmal spent 3 more years of surgical training in the areas of Periodontal and Implant surgery.
Having received his Specialty training in 2012, Dr. Akmal further completed his Board Certification in 2013 with the American Board of Periodontology (less than 50% of Periodontists have completed this exam), and has been working in the DMV area ever since.
